Thai massage is 2,500 years old and it is rooted in Ayurvedic medicine and Buddhist spiritual practice. Still its benefits are deeply relevant to the pressures of modern life. So who is Thai massage for?

People Living with Aches and Pains

If you ask me what are the most common complaints among my clients, I can easily say upper back, shoulders and neck. The next in line will be lower back and hips. Many of them are looking for relief from chronic pain like sciatica, neck tension, headaches and postural strain. Thai massage has a lot to offer to both people who exercise a lot and to those who sit for a living – two groups whose bodies, for very different reasons, tend to be in a constant state of complaint.

People Who Need to Switch Off

Life nowadays is relentless. Ironically, even our relaxation has to be scheduled and optimised. Massage offers something genuinely rare – time of doing nothing. Away from devices, chores and job and social demands. Thai massage uses rhythmic compression, slow movement and stretching and has a profound effect on the nervous system. It brings on a state of deep rest. Many people describe the feeling afterwards as a kind of mental reset. They feel quieter, clearer, and far less reactive to the noise of the day. And if you take a look at my reviews online, relaxing is maybe the most common word you’ll see.

People Who Feel Disconnected from Their Bodies

Now, it is a bit tricky to notice if you are disconnected from your body. People usually need some help to even know that there are areas that they don’t feel. I cannot even begin to count the times when I heard a client saying with surprise Oh, I didn’t know that there was so much tension in my legs/feet/arms..

We spend so much of our lives living from the neck up that many of us have quietly lost touch with the physical dimension of being human. Thai massage can reawaken a sense of physical presence that many people didn’t realise they’d lost. It’s grounding in the most literal sense.

People Struggling with Sleep

Poor sleep is rarely just a bedtime problem. It’s usually a whole-day problem – excess cortisol, a nervous system stuck in overdrive, a mind that won’t stop running. It simply becomes most obvious at night.

Thai massage addresses several of the root causes for sleep problems. It lowers cortisol levels and relaxes the muscles. It also activates the parasympathetic nervous system – the “rest and digest” state that needs to be switched on for quality sleep to happen. And it’s really easy to notice when this happens in a massage because your belly will start making sounds. I must say there is rarely a session when this doesn’t happen. Regular sessions can help break the cycle of tension and sleeplessness, making it easier for the body to wind down naturally at the end of the day.

People Recovering from Stress or Burnout

I am sure we all agree on this one. Stress is a huge factor in our lives. Touch, pressure, rocking, gentle holding – all of Thai massage techniques promote stress relief. It can also support recovery from burnout by improving circulation, enhancing immune support, and giving the nervous system space to begin regulating itself again. It won’t fix burnout on its own, but as part of a broader approach to rest and recovery, it can be a meaningful part of the process.

People Who Are Simply Curious and Want to Keep Feeling Good

You don’t need a specific complaint to benefit from Thai massage. Many people come simply because they want to experience something different. Or they’re interested in their own wellbeing, that’s reason enough.

A Note on Who It Isn’t For

Thai massage is done on the floor so if you know that coming down and up from the ground is challenging, then a table massage will be a better option for you. Recent surgery or acute injuries and fever are also contraindications. Always let me know about any health concerns before your session, and consult your doctor if you’re unsure.

Ready to Try It?

The best way to understand Thai massage is simply to experience it. Whether you’re carrying years of physical tension, looking for a deeper kind of relaxation, or just curious what all the fuss is about – there’s a good chance you’ll leave feeling better after your treatment.

Book a session and find out for yourself.
