Pregnancy is a period of rapid change in our lives. Our bodies change in a matter of months – hormones, weight gain, fluid retention, softening in the joints and more. We are expected to continue functioning as usual although we often need to slow down, rest and reorient in the new realities. Adjusting and navigating the novelty of pregnancy, along with the expectation can also add and element of stress. This is a time when we need support and understanding, space and time to grow the new life that we carry.
Massage during pregnancy can offer a variety of benefits, both physical and emotional:
- Reduced aches and pains: Massage can help with back pain, sciatica, shoulder and neck pain.
- Decreased stress and anxiety: Massage can help to lower the levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and to promote relaxation.
- Improved sleep: Many pregnant women experience difficulty sleeping due to discomfort, anxiety, or hormonal changes. Massage can help to improve sleep quality.
- Reduced swelling: Massage can help to improve lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling.
- Enhanced mood: Massage can stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural mood boosters.
- Improved circulation: Massage can help to improve blood flow.
Thai yoga massage doesn’t use oils that can irritate sensitive skin. It can be done in full in a side-lying position which is comfortable for both mum and baby.
Thai massage is a gentle and powerful practice that facilitates deep relaxation, enhances breathing, and helps with body awareness and grounding.
Please note that massage is generally not recommended during the first trimester.
