What Is Chi Nei Tsang?

Chi Nei Tsang (pronounced chee-nay-sung) is an abdominal massage that works with the organs and the energetic centre of the body. Rooted in ancient Taoist healing, this treatment\ can bring a sense of clarity and ease from the inside out.

Because the abdomen is the body’s central hub where nerves, blood vessels, and energetic pathways meet, working here has a powerful effect on both our physical and emotional wellbeing.

Chi Nei Tsang works of the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, big and small intestine, lungs, ovaries, and ureter and can help with a long list of issues. Here are some of them:

  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Slow digestion
  • Acid reflux
  • Heartburn
  • High cortisol levels
  • Lower back pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Sciatica

  • Fertility issues

What to Expect in a Session

  • This is a 1h massage.
  • The treatment is best done on an empty stomach – at least 2 hours after eating.
  • Hot herbal compress ball is used at the end of the treatment to gently massage and warm the belly.
  • The massage takes place on a comfortable futon on the floor with only your abdomen uncovered.
  • I use grape seed oil to massage the belly.
  • There can be some discomfort during the session, especially if you have never had an abdominal massage before and there is a lot of stagnation in the area. This is completely normal and usually by the end, there will be an improvement in the way you feel.
  • The treatment ends with gentle neck, head and face massage.

Abdominal massage is not recommended if:

  • You have a fever or acute infection
  • You are undergoing active treatment for cancer (unless your medical team approves)
  • During pregnancy
  • Within 6 weeks of abdominal surgery
  • You have severe inflammation, open wounds, or hernias in the abdominal area
  • During menstruation
