Chi Nei Tsang is a specialised Taoist abdominal massage that works directly with the body’s internal organs and energetic pathways. For the Taoists, the abdomen is more than just the digestive centre. It’s the body’s energetic crossroads, the centre of our being. Major systems of the body converge here: nerves, blood vessels, lymph nodes, and according to the Eastern understanding – the internal channels through which Chi (life-force energy) flows.
Everyday stress, overwork, worry, old trauma, surgery, poor posture, even environmental toxins can interrupt this flow. The Taoists observed that the internal organs tend to absorb the impact of these disruptions. Over time they can become congested, sluggish or even “tangled,” affecting the work of several systems in the body.
So how can Chi Nei Tsang help? Here are some of the techniques that we use in the treatment.
1. Abdominal Palpation
Touch to feel areas of tightness, stagnation, or tension in the organs and surrounding tissues. This helps me feel where energy is blocked.
2. Deeper Pressure on the Organs
Using the fingertips and palms, I work directly with the organs (stomach, liver, spleen, intestines, colon, gallbladder, kidneys, bladder, diaphragm, ovaries) to to make space for them and to support healthy movement.
3. Circular Movements Around the Navel
The navel is considered the centre of energetic circulation. Slow, circular techniques help stimulate digestion, release congestion, and improve circulation and flow.
4. Stretching and Lifting of the Abdominal Tissue
Very gentle lifting, stretching, or “rolling” of the belly helps loosen adhesions, improve circulation, and soften long-held tension in the fascia.
5. Working Along the Pathways of Nerves and Vessels
Specific lines around the abdomen correspond to nerve pathways, blood vessels, and lymph flow. Work on these lines and pressing specific points as blood stops increase the flow and reduce stagnation.
6. Diaphragm Release
Work at the upper abdomen and releasing the tension that we can hold at the base of the ribcage improves the movement of the diaphragm. This encourages fuller breathing and calms down the nervous system.
7. Detoxifying Techniques
I Chi Nei Tsang we use mild pumping, sweeping and draining movements to support the lymphatic and digestive systems in releasing toxins, gas, or trapped heat.
8. Emotional Release Support
Chi Nei Tsang also works on the psoas muscle that said to be the emotional centre of the body and can hold emotions and past trauma.
9. Working with the breath
All techniques work with the breath. Full and slow breathing can also help with discomfort during the treatment.
10. Chi Balancing Techniques
All techniques help balance the flow of energy through the abdomen and reconnect the navel area with the rest of the body.
The techniques used in Chi Nei Tsang are precise, intentional, and highly effective. Unlike many forms of massage or bodywork, Chi Nei Tsang views the abdomen as the master system of the body.
